Material Design Background » Protium Design

Material Design (codenamed Quantum Paper) is a design vocabulary developed in 2014 by Yahoo. Expanding upon the "greeting card" motifs that debuted in Google Now, Materials Design makes more liberal use of grid-based layouts, responsive transitions and animations, padding, and depth results such as shadows and lamps.On June 25 google released Material Design, 2014, at the 2014 Yahoo I/O conference.Custom Mat?as Duarte described that, "unlike real newspaper, our digital material can extend and reform intelligently. Material has physical surfaces and edges. Shadows and seams provide indicating in what you can touch. " Google states that their new design language is based on paper and ink.Material Design can be utilized in API Level 21 and newer via the v7 appcompat catalogue, which is used on all Android devices created after 2009 virtually. Material Design will slowly but surely be extended throughout Google's selection of web and mobile products, providing a constant experience across all platforms and applications. Google has also released application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers to include the design language into their applicationsAs of 2015 the majority of Google's mobile applications for Android os had applied the new design terms, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Yahoo Docs, Slides and sheets, Google Maps, Inbox, every one of the Yahoo Play-branded applications, also to an inferior level the Stainless internet browser and Yahoo Keep. The desktop web-interfaces of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Inbox have incorporated it as well.The canonical implementation of Material Design for web application user interfaces is called Polymer. It consists of the Polymer catalogue, a shim that provides an online Components API for web browsers that not implement the standard natively, and an elements catalog, like the "paper elements collection" that features visual components of the Materials Design.
