Materials Design (codenamed Quantum Newspaper) is a design vocabulary developed in 2014 by Google. Expanding upon the "cards" motifs that debuted in Yahoo Now, Material Design makes more liberal use of grid-based designs, responsive transitions and animations, padding, and depth effects such as light and shadows.Google announced Materials Design on June 25, 2014, at the 2014 Yahoo I/O conference.Developer Mat?as Duarte explained that, "unlike real paper, our digital materials can intelligently develop and reform. Material has physical corners and floors. Seams and shadows provide meaning about what you can touch. " Google states that their new design language is dependant on paper and ink.Material Design can be used in API Level 21 and newer via the v7 appcompat catalogue, which can be used on practically all Android devices created after 2009. Material Design will little by little be extended throughout Google's selection of web and mobile products, providing a regular experience across all platforms and applications. Google has also released application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers to include the design language into their applicationsBy 2015 the majority of Google's mobile applications for Google android possessed applied the new design terms, including Gmail, YouTube, Yahoo Drive, Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Google Maps, Inbox, every one of the Google Play-branded applications, and to a smaller scope the Chrome web browser and Google Keep. The desktop web-interfaces of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Inbox have incorporated it as well.The canonical implementation of Material Design for web program user interfaces is called Polymer. It involves the Polymer library, a shim that delivers an online Components API for web browsers that not implement the typical natively, and an elements catalog, like the "paper elements collection" that features visual elements of the Material Design.
