Material Design (codenamed Quantum Paper) is a design dialect developed in 2014 by Google. Expanding after the "credit card" motifs that debuted in Google Now, Material Design makes more liberal use of grid-based designs, responsive transitions and animations, padding, and depth effects such as lamps and shadows.Google declared Material Design on June 25, 2014, at the 2014 Yahoo I/O conference.Custom made Mat?as Duarte described that, "unlike real paper, our digital materials can expand and reform intelligently. Material has physical surfaces and edges. Shadows and seams provide signifying about what you can touch. " Google states that their new design language is based on paper and ink.Material Design can be used in API Level 21 and newer via the v7 appcompat catalogue, which is utilized on nearly all Android devices made after 2009. Material Design will gradually be extended throughout Google's selection of web and mobile products, providing a steady experience across all applications and platforms. Google has also released application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers to incorporate the look language into their applicationsAs of 2015 almost all of Google's mobile applications for Android os experienced applied the new design dialect, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Yahoo Docs, Slides and sheets, Google Maps, Inbox, all the Yahoo Play-branded applications, and to an inferior magnitude the Chrome web browser and Yahoo Keep. The desktop web-interfaces of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides and Inbox have incorporated it as well.The canonical implementation of Material Design for web application user interfaces is named Polymer.
