Material Design (codenamed Quantum Newspaper) is a design vocabulary developed in 2014 by Yahoo. Expanding upon the "card" motifs that debuted in Google Now, Materials Design makes more liberal use of grid-based designs, responsive animations and transitions, padding, and depth effects such as shadows and lamps.Google declared Materials Design on June 25, 2014, at the 2014 Yahoo I/O conference.Developer Mat?as Duarte explained that, "unlike real newspaper, our digital material can intelligently increase and reform. Material has physical ends and areas. Shadows and seams provide meaning in what you can touch. " Google says that their new design dialect is dependant on printer ink and newspaper.Materials Design can be used in API Level 21 and newer via the v7 appcompat catalogue, which is used on virtually all Android devices created after 2009. Material Design will little by little be extended throughout Google's selection of web and mobile products, providing a constant experience across all platforms and applications. Google has also released application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers to include the look language into their applicationsAs of 2015 most of Google's mobile applications for Android experienced applied the new design dialect, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Yahoo Docs, Sheets and Slides, Google Maps, Inbox, all the Google Play-branded applications, also to a smaller magnitude the Stainless Yahoo and browser Keep. The desktop web-interfaces of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Inbox and slides have integrated it as well.The canonical implementation of Material Design for web application user interfaces is called Polymer. It involves the Polymer library, a shim that delivers an online Components API for browsers that not implement the typical natively, and an elements catalog, like the "paper elements collection" that features visual components of the Materials Design.
