Material Design (codenamed Quantum Paper) is a design language developed in 2014 by Yahoo. Expanding upon the "greeting card" motifs that debuted in Yahoo Now, Materials Design makes more liberal use of grid-based designs, responsive transitions and animations, padding, and depth effects such as light and shadows.Google announced Material Design on June 25, 2014, at the 2014 Google I/O conference.Designer Mat?as Duarte explained that, "unlike real paper, our digital material can intelligently increase and reform. Material has physical surfaces and edges. Seams and shadows provide meaning about what you can touch. " Google states that their new design language is dependant on paper and ink.Material Design can be used in API Level 21 and newer via the v7 appcompat collection, which can be used on nearly all Android devices created after 2009. Material Design will slowly but surely be extended throughout Google's selection of web and mobile products, providing a constant experience across all applications and platforms. Google has also released application programming interfaces (APIs) for third-party developers to incorporate the design language to their applicationsBy 2015 most of Google's mobile applications for Android got applied the new design language, including Gmail, YouTube, Yahoo Drive, Google Docs, Slides and sheets, Google Maps, Inbox, all the Google Play-branded applications, also to a smaller extent the Chrome internet browser and Yahoo Keep. The desktop web-interfaces of Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Inbox and slides have integrated it as well.The canonical execution of Material Design for web software user interfaces is named Polymer.
